Best Virginia high schools in Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, says U.S. News

Top-quality public schools have long been one of the major attributes of the Northern Virginia area and a significant attraction for homebuyers.

Now, the latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report affirms that remains true in 2015, with 14 of the top 15 high schools in the state located in either Fairfax, Loudoun, or Arlington counties. And 17 of the top 20 are located in Northern Virginia.

The state's top-ranked school, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is a magnet school that also ranks #3 in the nation (in previous years it has held the top slot.) It's followed by Langley High School (#98 nationally).

Falls Church City's only high school, George Mason High School, ranked fifth in the state (#14 nationally). Briar Woods High School in Ashburn made Loudoun County's best showing, at #9 in the state (#268 nationally).

Two of Arlington County's three public high schools made the cut: Yorktown at #12 in the state (#299 nationwide) and Washington-Lee at #20 in Virginia (#537 nationwide). Arlington's H-B Woodlawn program also consistently ranks high in other nationwide surveys, but isn't evaluated by U.S. News & World Report because it draws students from several high schools.

The U.S. News survey evaluates more than 21,000 high schools nationwide.
